8th October 2018
Newcastle College Art and Design lecturers are part of a talented team of artists, who are showcasing some of the best Stoke-on-Trent creative talent the city has to offer in exciting new arts project, 'DUST Rising'.
'Dust Rising' is an ambitious visual arts biennial in Hanley that is open until Saturday 20 October, across 9 mixed-use venues including; The Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, The Town Hall, Bethesda Chapel as well as AirSpace Gallery and EN Gallery where a ‘DUST Trail’ will guide the public from one venue to the other.
The project sees 29 artists from several disciplines from painting and photography, to sculpture and installation, show new artwork in response to the heritage and happenings associated with the city, referencing either history or contemporary use of featured buildings.
Curated by Newcastle College Curriculum Leader for Art and Design, Joyce Iwaszko and artist Dawn Jutton, ‘DUST Rising’ links artists and venues to create an event that aims to raise the profile of visual art and the role it can play in making the city a vibrant place to live, work and visit.
The event builds on the successful 'DUST' series curated over 6 months in 2016/17 by lecturer Joyce Iwaszko and designer Andy Cooke. Cooke designed the original branding for the SOT2021 City of Culture bid, and it was the sophisticated use of colour along with Iwaszko’s ongoing research in the ceramics industry that inspired and established the 'DUST' theme. 'DUST Rising’ is the next stage in that ambition to develop a regular and sustainable biennial visual arts project and raise the profile of the city’s creative talent by showcasing established and emerging artists associated with the city. It aims to attract both residents of the city and visitors to Hanley who can enjoy viewing new and dynamic art on display in inspiring buildings that are themselves a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the area.
