Second year BTEC Level 3 IT students from Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG), Josh Osowiecki, Levi Goodwin and Connor Harrison have been commended for their swift action which saw them come to the aid of an elderly member of the public in Newcastle-under-Lyme Town Centre on Thursday 11 November.

Making their way from the College’s Knutton Lane campus to Newcastle bus station, the students witnessed an elderly lady fall, in distress and quickly rushed to her aid. The students alerted the nearby Douglas Macmillan Charity Shop for assistance, who were able to radio the Newcastle-under-Lyme Business Improvement District (BID) team to ensure first aid was on the scene within minutes.

Josh, Levi and Connor did all this while making sure the lady was reassured, felt safe, comfortable and as warm as possible by offering their coats until an ambulance arrived. Student Josh, also took the extra steps to telephone the daughter of the injured pedestrian, to alert her of the situation and provide reassurance as her mother was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital.

Sharing news of the students’ actions, Newcastle-under-Lyme BID Manager Alex Taylor got in touch with the College to praise their bravery and quick thinking, saying: “Each of these learners reacted in a compassionate and responsible fashion to ensure the member of the public received the best possible care.”

Lesley Morrey, Director of Student Engagement and Partnerships at NSCG, said: “We are very proud of Josh, Levi and Connor, they acted calmly and went the extra mile in a distressing situation. They should take pride in their actions - we are very pleased to acknowledge the support they gave to someone in need.”

Each student was rewarded with a Certificate of Commendation and Amazon vouchers from NSCG Newcastle College and vouchers for VUE Cinemas and Greggs from Newcastle-under-Lyme BID as a token of appreciation for their actions.
