Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Make-up student, Jade Newbrook has seen her popularity skyrocket on new social media platform TikTok after sharing a series of Special Effects Makeup (SFX) videos.
TikTok is a relatively new social video-sharing app taking the world by storm, where users can shoot, edit, and share videos. Creators can upload their 15-second videos with added filters, music, animation, special effects and users can also follow, like, and comment on everything they see.
Uploading her first video in October 2019, Jade now has nearly eighteen thousand followers and video views totalling nearly 7 million under her handle @darksidesfx__ where she shares her horror inspired make-up effects.
Commenting on her achievement Jade said; “I’ve had an Instagram account for a while where I upload my SFX videos, but I was looking for different platforms to showcase my work. I came across TikTok and uploaded my first video, which was my missing finger SFX and the response was overwhelming, with that video garnering 2.4million views within a week of going live.”
Originally studying A Levels, Jade soon realised that Theatrical Make-up was her passion and opted to enrol herself onto to the Level 3 Diploma In Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair & Media Make-up at Newcastle College, where she has thrived ever since.
She added: “Career wise I’ve been inspired by the likes of Jeffree Star as well as BBC Glow Up’s Tiffany Hunt, but ultimately I want to become a TV and Film SFX artist. I’m hoping that when I finish at college I can go onto either university or straight into the industry.”
Head of Professional Studies, Sue Burke said: "It’s remarkable the innovative ways in which students showcase their talents and get exposure for the fantastic work they’re already producing on a daily basis within the College environment – we wish Jade nothing but success as she continues to share her talents."
