On Monday 26 April, following lots of planning and consideration as part of their ‘Managing an Event’ unit, Level 3 Business students; Dylan Reeves, Todd Talbot, Marshall Wilson, Hasan Sheikh, Joel Davies and Tom Robinson will start the ambitious challenge of walking the full distance of a marathon (26.3 miles), raising awareness of mental health and fundraising for the charity, Mind.
Their challenge will start in Stone, before taking sights of the Bet365 Stadium, Newcastle, Clayton, Trentham and completing their journey back in Stone Town Centre. The team will be following COVID-19 social distancing guidance as part of their event safety plan.
On choosing to support this particular charity, Dylan said: “Between us all, this is a topic we feel very passionate about. When deciding what challenge to set ourselves we wanted nothing that catered to anyone specifically, knowing this, we decided to walk a marathon. Not only will this test us physically but also mentally which is what we need to do.”
Hasan added: “With mental health often being a silent battle, we all know someone who is struggling or has struggled even if it was not voiced. A £20 donation to Mind pays to run a peer support group for one hour, helping create a platform of support that can change people’s lives.”
Initially setting a target of £250, the students have smashed this, so far raising over £500.
The lads are also kindly being sponsored by Port Vale player, Christian Montano's clothing apparel company Champion Mindset, a clothing brand with the goal of identifying with those who have suffered and consequently offering help to those who struggle with mental health. 5% of the profits go to supporting mental health charities.
Business lecturer Nicola Stanway said: “The students have put a tremendous amount of planning and effort into their fundraising effort. We’re exceptionally proud of them and wish them all the best as they complete their challenge.”
