Course overview

The BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel and Tourism is a qualification which is equivalent to three GCSE grades 9-4. It provides learners with a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the travel, tourism and events industry. This industry is one of the most important contributors to the UK economy and an exciting industry to work in. Learners are provided with the skills and knowledge needed to gain employment in the industry. The course is designed for learners who wish to either enter employment in the tourism and events industry progress on a Level 3 course in travel and tourism with events.

You will attend College full-time for one year. Your timetable will include independent study time to enable you to consolidate the work carried out in lectures. All Level 2 Extended Certificate's are work-related qualifications designed to offer you a choice of routes into Level 3 programmes and employment.

On the course you study 3 Core Units and 9 Specialist Units. The three core units give learners an Introduction to the travel and tourism sector, an understanding of customer service and an understanding of the nature and effects of world travel – all fundamental to the success of travel and tourism organisations. The specialist units are varied and will equip learners with a broad and diverse experience. You will continue to improve your English and/or maths skills in structured lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in English and/or maths by the end of the year.

Maths and English
Alongside your course you will study maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.

What are the entry requirements?

You will have four GCSEs at grade 3 or above. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.

How is it assessed?

You are continuously assessed throughout the course. For each unit national standards are laid down, in which you have to show you are competent. Your tutors ensure that you are given opportunities to do this through projects, assignments, case studies and problem-solving situations. There are also 2 exam based units that form part of the assessment.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

On successful completion of the course you gain a widely recognised Level 2 qualification, the EDXCEL Level 2 Extended Certificate in Travel & Tourism. A Merit or Distinction grade may allow you to progress onto Level 3 qualifications.
