Course overview

The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism with Events is equivalent to three A Levels and provides you with the comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the tourism and events industry. This industry is one of the most important contributors to the UK economy and an exciting industry to work in. You are provided with the theoretical concepts used in the industry and the practical knowledge needed to gain a wide ranging experience of the industry. The course is designed for learners who wish to either enter employment in the travel, tourism and events industry or higher education.
You will attendcollege full-time for two years. Your timetable will include independent study time to enable you to consolidate the work carried out in lectures. All Level 3 Extended Diplomas are work-related qualifications designed to offer you a choice of routes into Higher Education and employment. You will study four core units and 14 specialist units. The four core units in the Extended Diploma give learners an introduction to the travel, tourism and events sector, the business of travel and tourism, investigating the UK as a tourist destination and customer service. The specialist units are varied and will equip learners with a broad and diverse experience including marketing products and services and examining the intricacies of marketing intangible products and service. Other areas of study include hospitality operations, long-haul travel, the cruise industry, tour operations, working as a holiday representative, events, conferences and exhibitions and entertainment for holidaymakers as well as specific tourism employment related units and preparation.
The course is about the practical development of business knowledge and skills. You learn, and are assessed, by doing. To help you there is a course team of friendly, approachable tutors committed to your success who will encourage you to use the College’s extensive resources including computer facilities, library, private study area and careers and counselling service. You will study English and/maths to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured classes, as well as having your English and maths assessed in all of your work throughout your course.

Maths and English
Alongside your course you will study maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.

What are the entry requirements?

Usually four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects that are relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

How is it assessed?

You are continuously assessed throughout the course. For each unit national standards are laid down, in which you have to show you are competent. Your tutors ensure that you are given opportunities to do this through projects, assignments, case studies and problem-solving situations.

What financial support is on offer?

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

The Level 3 Extended Diploma in Travel and Tourism gives you the skills and knowledge to pursue a career in one of many areas within the travel and tourism with events industry such as travel agency work, business travel, holiday reps, tour guides, events management, working for the local council or tourist boards. The course is essentially a Business Studies qualification and is therefore transferable to other sectors. It also qualifies you to progress to higher education at Higher National Diploma/Certificate or Degree Level. (You will also achieve UCAS points on a scale from 48 – 168).
