Course overview

The course provides two pathways into creative industries, catering to both traditional art, craft and design and digital media students. Both pathways include development of drawing, 3D, compositional and presentation skills; which are important to any creative student. The digital media pathway will include graphics, moving image, photographic and concept art projects. Art, craft and design will include fine art, illustration, print, ceramics and graphics based projects.

As well as developing your creative skills, you will be encouraged to learn more about the history of key subject areas and key artists and designers. The course takes one year to complete if you are studying full-time.

To achieve the BTEC Diploma you need to obtain a Pass or above in all coursework units to achieve the full qualification.

You will continue to improve your maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course and maths and English will also be integrated into your main course programme.

What else do I need to know?

We will provide you with basic art and design materials such as paper, pencils and charcoal however you will be given an additional materials list which will be needed to complete the course. Students are expected to work independently at times as part of their programmes, both inside and outside college. All students are expected to undertake work experience in a relevant area as part of their programmes.

On successful completion of the programme you will receive a diploma in Art and Design.

What are the entry requirements?

You will have 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview. You will be invited to bring examples of traditional 2D, 3D or digital artwork to ensure you receive the best guidance possible from staff.

How is it assessed?

You are continuously assessed throughout the course in response to practical coursework submissions. Assessments take the form of an individual display of work, which is assessed and evaluated by the staff that teach you.
