Course overview

The aim of the course is to provide you with an introduction into the exciting world of Fashion, Textiles and Costume Design. You will learn about the history of these subjects, how to create exciting design ideas and crucially, how to develop them into accomplished outcomes.

This is a practical course with a focus on developing skills relevant to the fashion industry. Some course units will include written elements. Independent study will be integrated into the course in order for you to achieve high grades. All students will undertake live briefs and work experience as part of their programmes.

What else do I need to know?

This is a highly successful course with students routinely making applications to top London and regional Universities. You will be taught by supportive specialist staff. The highlight of the year will be participating in a final catwalk show during a major college open event.

What are the entry requirements?

Usually four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects that are relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

You will also be expected to bring examples of your artwork to interview to help staff assess your suitability for art and design based study. We will consider applications from students who have not taken an Arts GCSE if they have a strong portfolio.

How is it assessed?

This is a hands on, practical qualification and you will be assessed throughout the programme at key assessment points. This will involve research, sketchbook study, practical work, design and drawing sheets, presentations and contextual studies. All assessments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. The 4 coursework units are internally assessed and may be externally moderated.
