Course overview

This full time, two year course is perfect if you want to work in the UK's booming creative indistries. Graphic Design is embedded throughout our lives and culture, including a broad range of specialisms such as branding, packaging, advertising, editorial , photography and typography. You'll develop your understanding of modern design practice, exploring software including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. You'll also experiment with traditional media including photo montage, print and illustration. You'll learn how to develop ideas from from research to final outcomes, improving your idea generation and presentation skills along the way. You'll learn about the history of Graphic Design and how the industry works. Crucially, you'll build an exciting portfolio to enable you to make a great university choice or apprenticeship application in year 2. You will normally study for 3 days per week, which may include English and Maths at an appropriate level. You'll engage in work experience, live briefs, trips and visits.

Graphic Design offers many exciting career pathways within the UK's booming Creative Industries. This growing sector employs over 2 million people. If you enjoy working to briefs, can problem solve and have creative flair, this could be a great course of study for you.

What are the entry requirements?

Usually four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects that are relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

You will be invited to interview where you will have the opportunity to discuss your artwork with a specialist lecturer.

How is it assessed?

The course contains a number of mandatory and specialist units related to Graphic Design. You will be assessed continually throughout the year as you complete each task within a unit of study. Tasks vary and include design work, written elements and presentations. Verbal feedback is offered regularly by our experienced specialist lecturers.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

You can progress onto the HNC in Digital Content Creation at our Stafford campus, or apply directly to study in HE at a University of your choice. Our students routinely apply successfully to some of the top Universities in the country.
