Course overview

This full time, two year course is perfect if you want to work in the UK's Photographic industry. Photography is an exciting career path, where no two days are the same. This full time, two year course is perfect if you are looking to join this exciting, diverse industry. During your time with us you’ll develop a range of techniques and learn a number of photographic skills, which you’ll then look to apply to your chosen route. These will include studio, landscape, photo journalism, fashion, commercial, portrait, digital, analogue and experimental approaches.

We’ll teach you the intricacies of digital image making and manipulation from truly understanding exposure, through to basic retouching and on to high end photographic montage. We will encourage you to move your work far beyond the screen, offering opportunities to develop magazines, make bound books and large scale prints, enabling you to produce exciting and original products and outcomes. Many of our students will progress to study a specialist area of Photography at University, or onto our in-house HNC and HND in Digital Content Creation for the web and social media, before stepping into their chosen careers.

The programme of study is normally 3 days in College and includes Photography, English, Maths, work experience, and other enterprise activities.

What else do I need to know?

You will be taught by highly experienced specialised staff, using digital techniques and approaches as well as more traditional techniques. We run a series of on location shooting workshops, as well as hosting visiting photographers to run masterclasses in their professional discipline. You will also have the opportunity to take part in course specific trips to events such as Format Festival, The Photography Show, the National Portrait Gallery, & the Tate Modern, as well as an annual European city visit. You’ll also show your work at course exhibitions and events.

What are the entry requirements?

Usually four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects that are relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

You will be invited to interview where you will need to show examples of photographic studies in either digital or printed form.

How is it assessed?

The course contains a number of mandatory and specialist units. You will be assessed continually throughout the year as you complete each task within a unit of study. Tasks vary and include practical work, underpinned by written work and discussions. All units are internally assessed and may be externally moderated.
