Course overview

This full time, two-year programme is perfect if you want to move into a career within the games industry. This practical, games design and development course will give you a wide variety of real skills used within the industry. This heavily digital course will teach you all aspects of how to create games from scratch. Including: 3D Modelling, C# Games Programming, Games Design, Unwrapping, Texturing, Asset Creation, Game Development and 3D Animation. You will learn how use Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya & Mudbox as well as a complete knowledge of the Unity Game Engine. These practical skills will be backed up with sessions in technical drawing, ideas generation and game theory. Students from this course have gone on to have successful careers within the industry at companies like Rockstar North, Valve, Codemasters and have even won Oscars for visual effects at The Frame Store. This course is the start of your journey into the games industry.

What else do I need to know?

You will have the opportunity to take part in a number of educational visits to centres which in the past have included London, Manchester, Liverpool, Paris, Berlin and Amsterdam. You can visit local creative events, productions and exhibitions such as museum and gallery exhibitions, as well as appropriate cinema visits and industry focused lectures. The course offers opportunities to produce live project work in collaboration with local and national companies as and when appropriate and involvement in selected regional and national competitions is also encouraged. Work produced has included World Skills Competition, Newcastle Borough Council, Stoke Your Fires, Young Creative Chevrolet, and the college Christmas E card. Essential materials and equipment for the course includes basic traditional drawing equipment, a pen drive/ external hard disk, A3 or A4 sketchbooks. It is advantageous to have access to the Internet at home, a camera and/or a printer. On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate in BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design Practice.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. You will also need a GCSE grade 4 or above in an Art-related subject and/or a good portfolio.

How is it assessed?

This is a hands on, practical qualification and you will be assessed throughout the programme at key assessment points. This will involve research, project work, sketchbooks, practical work, design and drawing sheets, presentations and contextual studies notes and essays. All assessments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

The specialist nature of this course ensures rapid development of your creative digital strengths. You can then progress successfully to a specialist Art, Design and Media University course such as Computer Games Design, 3D Animation, and Multimedia Design. You could also progress to the HND Digital Media Production at the College.
