Course overview

The introductory course you will give you the confidence to progress onto the full GCSE English Language course. While attending the introductory course you will complete an online initial assessment to provide you with your working at level. The main topics within the course will be reading for understanding, recognition of authorial choice of tone and style, and choosing one’s own writing style. Throughout the course you will develop your basic punctuation and grammar, and the accurate use of sentences and paragraphs

What else do I need to know?

Please note that courses run subject to minimum viable class sizes. Please note there may be additional costs for books, materials or other expenses.

In addition, a functional skills English class will run alongside the GCSE class, and will be available as an alternative to the GCSE English language course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to complete an interview prior to starting the introductory course. During the interview you will need to demonstrate a good level of English reading and writing skills, these will be assessed through a combination of online and writing tasks.

How is it assessed?

Throughout the introductory course you will complete progress assessments and weekly homework tasks. These will be used to ensure you are developing the appropriate skills to progress onto the full GCSE English Language course. In addition, at the end of the 6 weeks you will be given a GCSE entry test to ensure you are placed on the most appropriate course for you.

What can I do next?

To successfully progress on to the GCSE English language course you will need to pass the GCSE entry exam which will test the knowledge and skills you have developed within the introductory course. In addition to the entry exam, you will need to prove excellent commitment and attendance, as well as demonstrate a good level of progress and attainment in your weekly assessments and homework.
