Course overview

The course aims to equip learners with the skills, knowledge and understanding to begin to explore career opportunities within the Sports and Public Services sector and provide the skills and knowledge necessary to plan, deliver and evaluate safe and effective sport and Public Services activities. You will also gain a qualification to enable you to progress onto a level 2 programme on your chosen pathway as well as developing skills, which can be used in all forms of employment. The course also focuses on improving your skills in maths, English and I.C.T. This is a one year, full time course where learners will study units including Responding to an Incident, Assisting in a Sporting Activity. You will take part in a range of practical sports and fitness activities. You will also attend maths and English classes to help you continue to develop your skills and work towards passing an end of year exam.

What else do I need to know?

Additional learning opportunities may include visits to prisons, courts and local police/fire services. Guest speakers from the public services industry will provide you with an insight into their roles and responsibilities and possible career options.
You will also have the opportunity to become part of the Newcastle College Sports Academy and take join the Foundation Studies football team who enter competition within the Midlands FA. You also may use The Gordon Banks Sports Centre facilities including the gym, sports hall and Circuit Training etc.

What are the entry requirements?

You will have 2 GCSEs at grade 2 or below. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at interview.

How is it assessed?

You must pass all the units to gain this qualification. To pass each unit you will produce a portfolio of evidence including a range of written assignment work, presentations, project work, group work and practical-based assessments.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

Having successfully completed this course you could progress to the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Sport or Public Services, level 1 courses also help you to progress to other further education courses. If you feel that you have the ability to develop a range of skills, techniques, personal skills and aptitudes essential for successful performance in the Sport and Public Services sector then this is the course for you.
