Course overview

You will cover twelve units in total over the one year, full-time course. Some examples of the units you will study are anatomy and physiology in sport, work experience, fitness testing and training, physiology for sport, nutrition for sports performance and practical sports. You will continue to improve your maths and/or English skills in structured lessons alongside your course, and if you plan to progress to a Level 3 course you will need to demonstrate a satisfactory level of improvement in maths and/or English by the end of the year.

Maths and English
Alongside your course you will study maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.

What else do I need to know?

Alongside the BTEC level 2 course you will be expected to participate in all activities and excursions that are arranged as part of your course. This will include any compulsory residential trips. You will also be expected to purchase a BTEC Sports top to wear during practical sessions and revision workbooks to use during lectures for the assessed unit. There are online resources to support you on this course and an Additional Learning Support team if required.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need to have four GCSEs at grade 3 or above (these must include maths or English Language and ideally Physical Education). An interest in the theories, ideas and strategies within sport is a pre-requisite of the course. You are also required to attend a college interview to establish your suitability for the course. If you do not meet these entry requirements you will be advised to join the Level 1 Diploma in Sport.

How is it assessed?

The course is accredited by BTEC. The extended certificate will require you to successfully pass two external exams that include fitness for sport and exercise and also anatomy and physiology for sports performance, along with other additional continuous assessments throughout the year. This involves carrying out assignments, project work, presentations, report writing, class tests and collecting video evidence. All assessments will be graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction. You will also be expected to do independent study at home towards your assessments.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

On completion of the course you will gain the BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate in Sport which will allow you to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport providing you gain an overall Merit on the Level 2 course. The qualification is also designed to prepare you for appropriate direct employment in the vocational sector and is suitable for you if you have decided that you wish to enter a particular specialist area of work in the areas of sport, leisure and fitness. It also gives you the opportunity to develop a range of techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life.
