Course overview

This full time, one year course is perfect if you want to work in personal training. Personal training is an exciting industry to work in as you deal with a variety of people who are looking to achieve different health goals. Trainers use their developed knowledge to help push people to their limits. You will study four days a week including compulsory work experience to give you the employability skills needed to work in the personal training industry. The programme of study includes personal training, English, maths, work experience, enterprise and entrepreneurial concepts and problem solving.

This qualification contains 12 modules (2 at level 2 and 10 at level 3).

The qualification is internationally recognised with the level three diploma being worth 40 REPS points (Register of Exercise Professionals).

Learn about the fitness industry, applying the principles of nutrition to exercise plans, development personal training with clients, learn the principles of exercise, fitness and health.

Alongside your course you will study maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. If you have not achieved minimum grade 4 in maths, English Language or English Literature then you will be required to re-sit the applicable subject at the identified level.

What are the entry requirements?

Learners must have 4 GCSE’s including maths or English, or industrial experience to demonstrate their capability to study at level 3. Some experience of gym-based exercises, including free weights, is highly recommended. The course requires physical exertion and individual participation is essential, so a degree of physical fitness is necessary. There is an element of communication (discussing, presenting, reading and writing) involved, so learners should have basic skills in communication.

How is it assessed?

To pass this course you must pass all of the modules listed below. There is a variety of assessment methods to gauge your understanding of the module content. These assessment methods are: externally set formal exams, instruction role plays, documentation and related tasks linked to the fitness manuals provided.

Across these assessments listed below, learners will be assessed on the following essential knowledge, skills, techniques, concepts and theories relevant to the whole qualification and therefore the roles of a fitness instructor and personal trainer: • Anatomy and physiology. • Principles of fitness and exercise. • Planning exercise sessions. • Instructing exercise sessions. • Working with people. • Collecting and analysing information. • Data protection. • Communication. • Health and safety. • Customer care. • Self-evaluation and personal development. • Personal competence and scope of practice.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. From successfully achieving the award, learners will be industry ready and able to access the workplace. Having had a range of key partners to choose from for a work placement, learners will be well equipped and understand how the leisure and fitness sector works to gain employment
