Academy of Sport triumphs at the Association of Colleges (AoC) regional Sports Championships 2022
Talented sports people and teams at Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) Academy of Sport have made it through to the national rounds of the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sports Championships 2022.
Several teams from NSCG competed against colleges from across the Midlands for a chance to make it through to the national rounds taking place at Nottingham University in April next year.
The Andy Griffin Football Academy (AGFA) Newcastle squad won after a tense final ended in penalties, with their impressive finish seeing them become regional champs after Stafford’s AGFA saw success last year.
Football Coach at Newcastle College, John Johnston, said: “The lads were fantastic and got exactly what they deserved, we have a great group of players this year with some excellent talent and we are looking forward to the national finals.”
Approximately 40 students have now been selected to represent the West Midlands team including those from the ladies, men’s and mixed Volleyball teams who were announced regional winners once again. Badminton – who triumphed in 1st and 2nd positions and one men’s Tennis player and three NSCG Cross Country runners all qualified for the national championships.
Dave Sutton, Academy of Sport Manager, said: “We’re thrilled so many of our talented sports teams and individuals made it through to the National Championships. Not only was their performance recognised but they also conducted themselves brilliantly and were a credit to NSCG.
“I would particularly like to congratulate the AGFA boys’ football squad from Newcastle who won the West Midlands title for the first time - they played brilliantly and it is well-deserved.”
Exclusive to AoC Sport member colleges, the AoC Sport National Championships attracts teams from England and Wales and is one of the largest annual sporting events of its kind in the UK, involving over 1700 college students. The Championship gives member colleges from across the country the chance to showcase and celebrate the achievements and inspirational work of students and staff in college sport.
