Green Careers Week: Q&A with Environmental Science Students

As part of Green Careers Week 2024, A Level Environmental Science students have been exploring the growing significance of green careers in addressing global environmental challenges.

Through interactive workshops and guest lectures from professionals in the sustainability sector, students have been gaining insights into the wide range of career opportunities available in fields like renewable energy, environmental consultancy, conservation, and sustainable design.

Students have been encouraged to reflect on their own career aspirations and how they might contribute to a sustainable future. By considering their skills, interests, and the urgent need for climate action, these young learners are beginning to map out potential career paths that align with both their passions and the planet's needs.

Rhianna Adams

Do you see your future career being focused around environmental science? What sector are you interested in?

I want to have somewhat of a career in the environmental sector. Particularly in water treatment/conservation or energy conservation. I also love the idea of being able to inform people about the environment with my own knowledge.

What impact do you hope to have on the environment or society through your work?

I want to be able to raise awareness so that everyone knows what danger the earth is threatened with. From this, I want to encourage as many people as possible to help, e.g. changing to electric cars and changing their behaviours to be more sustainable.

What motivated you to choose environmental science as your field of study?

I chose to study Geography in high school and was always fascinated by how much it impacts the environment. I have always had an interest for nature and conservation, which is part of the reason as to why I chose Environmental Science. I realised I wanted to make a difference in the world.

What impact do you hope to have on the environment or society through your work?

I want to be an Environmental Scientist and work with communities in less fortunate areas of the world through development work. I want to help every less fortunate area in the world, as unrealistic as it may seem, I’m determined to do it.

What motivated you to choose environmental science as your field of study?

I’ve always had a growing passion for wildlife and the environment and I know I would thrive working in a career that focuses around that.

What impact do you hope to have on the environment or society through your work?

I want to be able to help the future of the environment with my career, particularly by spreading awareness of the consequences of climate change.

Sebastian Calcroft

What motivated you to choose environmental science as your field of study?

I personally prefer the holistic nature of the subject, as it not only condenses multiple sciences together but also link multiple subsections of the subject to answer questions. I can always build further on my previously gained knowledge and reapply it in so many ways.

Do you see your future career being focused around environmental science? What sector are you interested in?

I want to help apply sustainable methods of farming and design, mainly through managing different holdings such as country estates and lead them to manage their land more sustainably. I want to create new methods of sustainability but also improve upon the methods already being used.
