NSCG students win host of awards at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) regional competition

Students from Newcastle and Stafford College scooped first, second and third places at the regional heats of the AHT Hair and Beauty Competition last month, making it through to the finals taking place in Blackpool in May.

A number of Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up students have once again impressed industry judges by winning a host of awards at the regional heats for the prestigious industry competition.

Level 2 Hair & Media Make-up students Sam Eggington and Grace Holden took 1st place in the category ‘Kings or Queens of the Sea’ with a creative coral headdress and delicate green eye make-up.

Kenzi Shepherd, was awarded 2nd place and Alex Brown took 3rd in the ‘Graffiti’ category and Sophie Parkin scooped 3rd place in the ‘Old Hollywood’ category for the glamourous movie star look she created on model and fellow Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up student, Grace Blurton.

Lorraine Drayton, NSCG Curriculum Manager for Hair and Beauty said: “We are extremely proud of our students for achieving first, second and third places in three out of the 21 categories. The level of skill at the AHT competitions is always very high, so to come away with these awards is a fantastic achievement.

She continued: “All of our learners did extremely well considering many of them only started in September and they represented the College brilliantly. Competitions can be quite nerve-wracking and are very different to being in a classroom environment so they should be as proud of themselves as we are of them. Bring on the finals in May!”

The Association of Hairdressers & Therapists was founded in 1963 by a group of hairdressing teachers as a national network of like-minded specialists who exchanged good practice and support. The competition allows students to build their confidence and experience of working under pressure as they showcase their talents in a competitive environment.
