Q&A with Floristry learner, Jackie Bailey
Jackie Bailey, aged 53 chose to return to the education as an adult learner as she has an keen interest in flowers and wanted to learn a new skill.
We recently chatted to mum of three, Jackie to hear all about her experiences of studying at NSCG as an older learner and where she hopes the course will take her.
Why did you choose to return to education?
I love flowers and I wanted to learn a new skill, so I thought this would be a good fit for me. I thought that this could change my life and open up a new career for me.
What attracted you to study the Level 1 and Level 2 Floristry courses at NSCG?
I took a look on the website at what my options were and these courses suited me. It was also quite close to home so that worked perfectly for me. I really want to make beautiful arrangements for as many people as possible.
How have the courses change you and your life so far?
Signing up for a course has changed me in so many ways. It has helped me with my confidence and actually made me believe in myself. My friends and family love to see the enjoyment I get from arranging flowers.
What have you enjoyed most about studying Floristry?
Meeting new people has been brilliant. It's great to learn new skills alongside adults who also have a similar interest. We share experiences and help each other - and also have a good laugh which has made me a more confident person.
Have there been any difficult moments along the way?
A. Getting to college in the first place was a massive hurdle for me. I struggle with self confidence, but this course has been life-changing. Apart from that, I feel that my tutor really helped to motivate and inspire us to flourish in our own ways.
What's next for you?
I would really like to enrol on the Business Start-Up Course and continue to develop my skills in Floristry. I also want to set up my own business so these skills will help me to get to where I want to be.
We know that it's a big deal for adult learners to step back into college. What are your top tips for making the most of your time in college?
Take every opportunity and every bit of advice from the tutors. It feels scary at first, but everyone is in the same boat so even just chat to other people in your class about their experiences and knowledge.
