Lifelong Learning Week: Q&A with accounting apprentice Norbert Jankowski

NORBERT

Currently completing his apprenticeship at Deans Accountants, Norbert Jankowski is no stranger to NSCG after completing his Level 3 studies at Stafford College. Norbert has now been given the exciting opportunity to progress in his career.

Here, Norbert chats to us about is journey from full-time education as a younger learner to continuous professional development as an adult learner.

Why did you decide to study at NSCG as an adult learner?
Choosing NSCG to continue my studies was a great option for me as it was a natural progression from my full time Level 3 studies. I already had a good idea what NSCG was like and it's success rates, so I really couldn't imagine myself completing my AAT studies anywhere else.

What attracted you to an AAT course and the apprenticeship pathway?

I really enjoyed the finance topics on the Level 3 Business courses and I have decided to pursue this interest to help me to achieve my career ambitions of becoming a Chartered Accountant in the future. The apprenticeship route is perfect for me as I can gain the important work experience and study around that to help me to build the classroom knowledge.

How do you find studying at college alongside your day job?

At first, I found it difficult to manage my time between college and work, and not forgetting to rest in between! I was trying to manage my time in different ways to see what suited me best, but now I have separated my work days from college days to help me to focus on both aspects of my apprenticeship.

Describe the key skills you have developed from studying accounting?
The main aspects that I've developed include planning, communication skills, empathy and patience. I've developed a greater understanding of my job and accounting techniques.

How have your tutors supported you on your journey?

My tutor has been great and has helped me with everything as I needed the support. The lessons have been enjoyable and tailored to everyone in the class. The teaching team go above and beyond with every aspect of each topic covered, resulting in successful exam results.

How has your apprenticeship changed your life so far?

Studying has helped me to make a choice of what I want to do in the future. I am getting lots of positive feedback from my managers, and I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of my employer and NSCG.

What's next for you?

I will continue with my studies to achieve my end goal of Chartered Accountancy status.

What would your advice be to adult learners looking to study an AAT course?
AAT is a great place to start if you're thinking of getting into accountancy. Material covered really helps with the first steps into accountancy and you can progress through the levels.
