Q&A with Access to HE adult learner Stephanie Blairs
Stephanie Blairs has returned to Stafford College to study an Access to HE Diploma (Science) to pursue a rewarding career in healthcare science. Here she tells us why she chose to study at NSCG and how she has found this 12-month fast track course.
Why did you choose to return to education?
I decided to come back into education to be able to study at a higher level in a scientific aspect of healthcare. I have a particular interest in radiography and physics and already working in the healthcare sector, I thought that this course would be the perfect option to help me to get to where I want to be.
What attracted you study the Access to HE Diploma (Science) pathway at Stafford College?
Not many other colleges offer this course, and living in Staffordshire, the commute has been manageable. I wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the subject area to open doors in my career in radiography.
How do you juggle work and studying?
It takes real effort to be organised, but once you start on the course, you quickly learn to develop study skills such as prioritising your workload. I know when my assignments are due in and I try and work around those key dates.
What has been the best thing about studying as an adult learner?
The Science group is fairly small, which means we are a close-knit group and always supporting each other. Everyone really looks out for one another, which has been really nice.
After college, what's next for you?
My options are a higher level apprenticeship in radiography, and I have also applied to study at Keele University, Chester and Nottingham.
What are your top tips for adult learners looking into studying an Access to HE Diploma?
Apply for an Advanced Learner Loan if you are eligible for it as this will help to take the pressure of financially. The Access course is just 10 months of your life, so for just a short term commitment, you will end up with a long term career. Be organised and ask for help as you need it. The course is so worth it!
