A+ Programme Extended Certificate in Applied Human Biology

The health sector is one of the largest employment sectors in the UK. Around 50,000 people employed are in applied health science occupations. In this course you will study how the human body functions at a genetic, cellular and tissue level. You will gain understanding of how human biology and lifestyle factors interact to affect the health of individuals and populations. 

You will also explore the many ways that this knowledge can be applied in order to improve diagnostic and health outcomes. This course will give you a foundation for biological study, as you will gain theoretical knowledge of human body functioning, an insight into the factors and risks affecting health and knowledge of how biology is applied to make a positive impact on all our lives.

This course is best studied alongside A Levels that compliment this subject e.g. Psychology & Sport

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including maths and English Language, in subjects relevant to your A Level or A+ Programme subject choices. You should also have a GCSE grade 6 in Biology or grade 6-6 in Combined Science

This course is assessed through a variety of means, including internally assessed unit assignments (moderated by Pearson), externally assessed unit assignments and two external exams (one in each year). The units are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction and, for the internally assessed units, could take a variety of forms. These include: completing practical tasks, written practical reports, presentations, scientific posters and research reports. The assessments are designed to provide you with a broad range of skills, which will ensure that you are thoroughly prepared for your chosen progression route after college.

Applied Human Biology can lead to a pathway or career in health sciences. It provides a solid foundation for progression into health and health science sectors.

Example career options include occupational therapy, allied health and sciences including life sciences, clinical biomedical sciences, physiological sciences and much more.

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. 

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £26,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment.
