Course overview

Apprentices learn advanced hairdressing techniques, including colour correction, creative cutting and styling, preparing them for roles as skilled and creative hairdressers in salons or freelance settings.

The topics you will cover whilst training include:

  • Providing Hair Consultations,
  • Creatively Cutting Hair,
  • Creatively colouring Hair.

Optional Units can include –* Contributing to the Financial effectiveness of the business.

  • Contribute to the planning and Implementation of Promotional activities.
  • Hair Colour Correction services.
  • Develop and Enhance your Creative Hairdressing Skills

Typical job roles include- Building your own column of Clients effectively to enhance your own training opportunities and enhance the business as a whole.

Being responsible for following Health and Safety regulations in the salon and supporting others in the salon environment to understand regulations and procedures where necessary.

Presenting an overall professional image at all times.

Participating in on -going training in advance Hairdressing Skills. This can happen through your own salon, arranging training with your Employer and booking own models to develop new skills.

This will also happen in the college environment with guest artists who are invited in to deliver specialist training.

You will participate in block weeks for Advanced Colour training, which are planned for you into the academic year.

Successfully obtained NVQ L2 in Hairdressing. Maths and English GCSE at Grade 4 or equivalent.

Your progress is continually monitored throughout the course. You and your Assessor will arrange assessments to be seen when they visit you in the workplace. You will receive feedback on your work and new targets will be set to further develop your skills and plan for further Assessments.

Assessments in Hairdressing can also take place in the Colleges Commercial salon on paying clients.

For each unit you will need to pass a number of practical observations.

You will also be required to pass an exam for each unit; these will be taken on line.

Assessments will include -Creatively Style and Finish the Hair, Creatively Colour the Hair and, Creatively cut the Hair.

Assessments can also be carried out on optional units, which can include Colour correction and Cutting Gents Hair.

Once you have completed your programme and your employer is satisfied that you are consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard and all of the pre-requisite gateway requirements for EPA have been met, you will be put in for your End Point Assessments which take place within 3 months.

The End Point Assessment will have 3 assessment methods:

  • Knowledge Test
  • Observation and questioning
  • Professional Discussion

If you successfully achieve all parts of the apprenticeship, your assessor will discuss with you and your employer the next steps to take. Dependent on your roles and responsibilities, this may be the next level of the subject you have been studying already or a different pathway.

While you are on an apprenticeship your employer pays you a salary and supports you whilst you undertake your training.
