Course overview

This two year course is all about understanding how computers work and developing skills in areas such as using social media in business, Computer Games Development, Cyber Security. You will learn about all key aspects of Computing and IT.

During year 1 you will cover Information Technology Systems, Creating Systems to Manage Information, Using Social Media in Business, Programming, Data Modelling, Website Development, Computer Games Development.

Year 2 will include Project Management, Big Data and Business Data Analysis, Cyber Secuirty and Incident Management, IT Technical Support and Management, Software Testing and IT Service Delivery.

As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a Maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade 5 or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade 4).

The study programme will incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.

What else do I need to know?

You will undertake a minimum of 3 days’ work experience to help gain valuable and employable skills which will help when looking for employment following the course. Trips will be available to support the course, for example in the past we have taken students on trips to Eurogamer, Gadget Show Live, Bletchley Park and to local universities. We have a large number of ex-students who visit to talk about their careers since being students on this course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at
GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d
like to study, including maths and/or English
Language at grade 4 or above. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

An IT qualification such as GCSE or OCR National is also desirable. All applicants will be required to attend interview, together with undertaking a test of their current IT knowledge.

How is it assessed?

You are continuously assessed throughout the course. 42% external assessment (where one unit is assessed by a written exam and three units assessed by a task set by the awarding body and completed under supervised conditions). 58% internally assessed coursework. 14 units in total. Learning is through many different methods, including discussion, research and presentation, together with practical skill development where possible. There is a requirement placed on students to work outside of class.

This course is assessed through coursework activities, external assessment and examinations across both years of the course. There are opportunities to give presentations and to present work in the college auditorium to an invited audience.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

The majority of students from this course progress to a university based programme such as Computer Science, Software Development or Business Information Systems. Some choose to study Games Programming. You can choose to study for a HE qualification here at NSCG through the HND in Applied Computing, or to enter employment, possibly through an Apprenticeship.
