Course overview

This Level 3 Certificate Mathematical Studies qualification will consolidate your mathematical understanding, build your confidence and competence in applying mathematical techniques to solve a range of problems. As well as introduce you to new techniques and concepts that will prepare you for further study and future employment within a broad range of academic, professional and technical fields.

Mathematical Studies aims to prepare you for the mathematical demands of higher education and work where there is a distinct mathematical or statistical element, but where the mathematical demands do not stretch to a requirement for A-level mathematics.

During your course of study, the qualification will engage you with:

  • Developing mathematical modelling, evaluating and reasoning skills
  • Solving problems, some of which will not be well defined and may not have a unique solution
  • Solving substantial and real life problems encountered by adults
  • Using ICT as an exploratory tool for developing mathematical understanding and when solving problems
  • Developing skills in the communication, selection, use and interpretation of their mathematics

You will need a minimum of a GCSE grade C/5 or above in maths and English. In addition, you will be asked to demonstrate a strong score in your maths initial assessment prior to the course starting.

For the first seven weeks, you are enrolled on an introduction to Level 3 mathematical Studies, where you will be taught the essential skills to help progress on to the main qualification. At the end of the seven weeks, you will complete an internal assessment to check your progress, followed by a one to one with your teacher to look at your strengths, developments and suitability to progress to the full qualification.
