Course overview
You will learn about basic issuesrelating to construction including working safely, communication skills and building
methods and construction technology to enable you to progress to further training or
employment. You will spend a large amount of your time developing your practical skills by
completing a range of practical projects in our workshops. You will also have classroom
based sessions and computer-based learning resources that you will use to develop your
understanding of the tools, materials and technologies used in your trade. You will be
expected to complete work outside your main classes.

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above

How is it assessed?
You will be assessed by the use of practical assessments and assignments that will form a
portfolio of your work. You will also complete practical and theory tests at the end of your
training course.

What financial support is on offer?

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £26,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?
Having completed the course, you will be well prepared to progress to the Level 3 Diploma
in Site Joinery. You will also be well prepared to move into employment with construction
companies including becoming an advanced apprentice. Here, you would work on site for
four days per week but continue your learning at College one day a week.
