Course overview

Are you a bright spark who’s keen to gain employment as an electrician? On this course you’ll discover a broad range of skills for electrical installation in domestic, commercial and industrial premises.

You will learn about health and safety, understanding and using technical information, develop further understanding of electrical and electronic principles, designing and installing electrical systems, inspection and testing of electrical installations, fault finding and rectification on electrical systems.

By the end of the course, you will be able to work confidently and safely in installing complex electrical systems and be able to produce high quality work.

The Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation is comprised of both practical and classroom-based theory sessions, many of which will be focussed on completing projects. This will include practicing hand skills in connecting different types of circuits and hands-on training in our industry standard workshop.

As part of your study programme you also get the opportunity to complete a maths and/or English GCSE if you have not already achieved a grade 4 or above.

What else do I need to know?

As part of your course, you will visit building sites and electrical installation companies to find out more about real-life work in a range of settings. There may also be opportunities to undertake work experience as part of the course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. You’ll also need to have achieved the Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installation.

How is it assessed?

You will complete a range of practical projects and will be assessed and monitored throughout the year on these. This will include producing a portfolio of your work. You will also have to complete a multiple choice test for each unit you study and written assessments for some units.

What financial support is on offer?

College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £26,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances. What can I do next?

After completing the course you will be able to progress to employment with an electrical installation company as an electrician.
