Course overview

The UK is currently at the forefront of modern fashion and fuels the UK economy. The direct value of the UK fashion industry to the UK economy has risen from £26 billion to £28 billion in the last 4 years. According to the British fashion council fashion is a booming industry that currently supports 880,000 jobs. Currently the UK has 3 Universities in the TOP 10 fashion schools in the world. Central Saint Martins and Kingston University being the Top 2. Leading UK fashion designers include; Erdem, Mary Katrantzou, Stella McCartney, Burberry, Margaret Howell, Shrimps, Vivienne Westwood, Christopher Kane and upcoming designers; Molly Goddard, Ashley Williams, Faustine Steinmetz, Matty Bovan and Mimi Wade.

The aim of the course is to provide you with an introduction into the exciting world of Fashion. You will learn about the influences in Fashion, fashion promotion, styling, fashion design, fashion technology, garment production and manufacturing, textiles, communication and trends. You will produce a portfolio of creative and technical skills that will showcase everything you need for a direct application to HE.

You will cover a range of units over a two year, full-time course. The course normally runs over three days within the college week. All students are expected to give significant time to their studies outside college. Real world work experience opportunities will be part of your programme as will independent study.

What else do I need to know?

You will have the opportunity to take part in a number of educational visits to relevant exhibitions and galleries as well as market research activities to gain an understanding of target markets, trends and influences within Fashion. You will need a selection of fashion based materials, including drawing equipment, and scissors for paper and fabric. Further details concerning equipment required for the course will be provided prior to you starting the course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will have a minimum of four GCSE's, grade 4-9. Alternatively, you’ll have a Level 2 Diploma with overall Pass in a relevant subject.

You will also be expected to bring relevant examples of your artwork to interview to help staff assess your suitability for art and design study. We will consider applications from students who have not taken an Arts GCSE if they have a strong portfolio.

How is it assessed?

This is a hands on, practical qualification and you will be assessed throughout the programme at key assessment points. This will involve fashion research, design sheets and project work, sketchbooks, practical work, and contextual studies notes and essays. All assessments will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Both first and second years of your main programme will include externally marked units.

What financial support is on offer?

This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18. If you are outside this age group please contact 01782 254188.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a household income under £23,000 can receive up to £20 per week financial support to help pay for travel and meals and meet the costs of essential trips, books, stationery and equipment. The payments will be subject to full attendance on your course. A range of other financial support is available, depending on your personal circumstances.
