Our HNC in Engineering at NSCG offers a dynamic learning experience taught by industry professionals who are experts in their field. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing analytical skills and understanding design concepts relevant to the engineering sector. Whether aspiring to become engineering technicians or engineers, graduates of the HNC program are equipped with the skills, behaviours and expertise required to excel in the field of engineering.
The HNC in Engineering will run in collaboration with the Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Institute of Technology (SoTIoT) and is a well-established and recognised qualification within the engineering industry. This is a vital qualification for those who wish to progress on to a higher-level technical qualifications or more senior positions within the sector.
Taught by experienced industry professionals who are experts in their field in, you will have the opportunity to learn and grow in NSCG's industry standard workshops using specialist equipment to enhance your learning. As part of this course, you will be encouraged to develop high levels analytical skills linked to the sector along with the development and understanding of design concepts.
Students will study eight units over a 2 year duration. The HNC qualification requires the achievement of at least a pass grade in a minimum of eight units. The HNC is constructed using four core units and four optional units selected by the delivery team in line with industry requirement.
The HNC core units are:
- Engineering Science
- Engineering Maths
- Engineering Design
- Managing a Professional Engineering Project
Through the study of these core units, you will develop the essential and fundamental knowledge, skills and behaviours that all engineers require - irrespective of future specialism, and by selecting a set of focused study units, you will be able to build a body of specialist knowledge to be successful in engineering at Technician or Engineer level.
This course has been developed to ensure that your education is relevant and up-to-date. Emphasising the importance of work-based experience, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to existing companies and gain valuable skills that will inform your future practice.
The teaching of this course is designed to provide students with the required theoretical knowledge in the context of practical experiments and formal teaching. In addition to traditional teaching methods, wide use is made of industry standard software and technical equipment, along with computer-based resources.

The HNC is equivalent to the first year at university and is a recognised Level 4 qualification. On completion of the HNC, students may choose to progress onto a HND which is is equivalent to the second year of a Bachelors degree. The HND course is offered subject to numbers and could be offered at either Newcastle or Stafford campuses.
Students could then go on to 'top-up' to a Bachelors degree.
There are two types of loans you may be eligible for: tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans). You pay these loans back when you finish your course and earn over £25,000. If you earn less than that, you won't have to repay anything. If you;re earning more than that, Student Finance England will work out your repayments at 9% of your income over that amount.
