Our HND in Engineering at NSCG offers a dynamic learning experience taught by industry professionals who are experts in their field. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing analytical skills and understanding design concepts relevant to the engineering sector. Whether aspiring to become engineering technicians or engineers, graduates of the HND program are equipped with the skills, behaviours and expertise required to excel in the field of engineering.

The HND in Engineering will run in collaboration with the Stoke-on-Trent & Staffordshire Institute of Technology (SoTIoT) and is taught by experienced industry professionals who are experts in their field. The aim of the course is to provide skills, knowledge and behaviours for Technician Engineers to enable them to progress in industry. As part of this course, you will be encouraged to develop high levels analytical skills linked to the sector along with the development and understanding of design concepts.

This course has been developed to ensure that your education is relevant and up-to-date. Emphasising the importance of work-based experience, you will have the opportunity to apply your knowledge to existing companies and gain valuable skills that will inform your future practice.

For the HND the core units are:

  • Research Project (Double)
  • Professional Engineering Management
  • Further Mathematics
  • Lean Manufacturing

The teaching is designed to provide students with the required theoretical knowledge in the context of practical experiments and formal teaching. In addition to traditional teaching methods, wide use is made of industry standard software and technical equipment along with computer-based learning resources.

Through the study of the engineering core units, you will develop the essential and fundamental knowledge, skills, and behaviours that all engineers require - irrespective of future specialism - and by selecting a set of focused study units, you will be able to build a body of specialist knowledge and skills behaviours to be successful in a range of careers in engineering, at the Technician or Engineer level.

A pass in BTEC HNC General Engineering will be required to begin studying for a BTEC HND in General Engineering.

This course is assessed using a combination of assignments, reports, practical experiments, circuit construction and presentations.

Students will gain a nationally recognised and highly respected higher education qualification in engineering which can lead to employment or career enhancement in general Engineering or other Engineering Fields.

The HND is equivalent to the second year at university and is a recognised Level 5 qualification. On completion of the HND. Students could then go on to 'top-up' to a Bachelors degree at University.

There are two types of loans to help students cover the costs of their higher education course in college: tuition fee loans and living cost loans (also called maintenance loans). You pay these loans back when you finish your course and earn over £25,000. If you earn less than that, you won’t have to repay anything. If you’re earning more than that, we’ll work out your repayments at 9% of your income over that amount.
