Course overview
Gain the basic skills and practical experience needed to begin a successful career in engineering operations by studying this short, introductory course. During this course, you will learn the foundations of engineering techniques and understand the basics of operating essential machinery.
During this 12-week course, you will study alongside like-minded adult learners to learn the following skills:
- Safe Operation of Machinery: Learn the fundamentals of operating engineering machinery safely.
- Hand-Fitting Techniques: Develop skills in hand-fitting, including the use of hand tools to produce components to industry standards.
- Machining Techniques: Develop skills in the safe operations of machine tools - turning milling.
- Measuring and Inspection: Use measuring and inspection equipment to check for accuracy of components.
There are no formal entry requirements for this course; however, learners should be aged 19 or over and reside in Staffordshire, with Staffordshire County Council as their local authority.
Progress will be monitored through practical projects, observations, and individual learning plans to ensure understanding and skill development align with course outcomes.

Upon successful completion, learners may progress to other short courses or qualifications in engineering, such as machining, welding, or health and safety.
This course is FREE. Please note that you will be asked to pay for the below equipment:
- Personal Protective Equipment: Participants are required to purchase one-piece overalls and steel toe cap boots for practical sessions.
- Materials Contribution: A £30 contribution towards materials is requested to support the hands-on components of the course.
