Course overview

Study this short introductory course to gain the confidence to progress onto the full GCSE Biology course in November 2024. 

The introductory course you will give you the confidence to progress onto the full GCSE Biology course. While attending the introductory course you will complete an initial assessment to identify your starting point, current knowledge of biology and your commitment to achieving the qualification. Once you have completed your initial assessment, you will start to study topics from the GCSE Biology syllabus. 

The full GCSE courses is split into 8 topic areas: cell biology; organisation; infection and response; bioenergetics; homeostasis and response; inheritance, variation and evolution; ecology and key ideas.

You will need to complete an interview prior to starting the introductory GCSE Biology course. During the interview, you will have the opportunity to explain why you wish to study GCSE Biology, as well as provide evidence of your suitability, commitment and prior attainment.

Throughout the introductory course you will complete progress assessments and weekly homework tasks. These will be used to ensure you are developing the appropriate skills to progress onto the full GCSE Biology course. In addition, at the end of the 7 week introductory course you will be given an entry test to ensure you are gained sufficient fundamental knowledge to help you through the full GCSE Biology course.

Once you progress on to the Full GCSE Biology course you will be required to sit 2 x 1hr 45 formal exams, each contributing 50% of the total GCSE qualification and marked externally

Paper 1 assesses the first 4 topics

Paper 2 assesses topics 5-8

Within the course there are also 10 required practical’s which must be completed within the evening sessions.

To successfully progress on to the GCSE Biology course you will need to pass the GCSE entry test that will test the knowledge and skills you have developed within the introductory course. In addition to the entry exam, you will need to prove excellent commitment and attendance, as well as demonstrate a good level of progress and attainment in your weekly assessments and homework.
