Course overview

The part-time Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. 

Please note that courses run subject to minimum viable class sizes. 

The course consists of several mandatory units. Example units covered including:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people

Learners will also undertake maths and English functional skills alongside this programme which will support progression on to the Level 3 Diploma.

Applicants should gain a minimum of Level 1 in maths and English initial assessments. A good working knowledge of ICT is also required. In addition applicants must have had some experience as a teaching assistant in a school setting and have at least 6 hours per week guaranteed before the course starts.

The course is assessed through a range of assessment methods; these include direct observation of performance in the workplace, professional discussions, assignments, presentations, written/oral questioning. All evidence is collated and presented in an e-portfolio.

This course may lead to a Level 3 diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning or a range of short courses suitable to support your role within the school environment.
