This exciting course provides an introduction into a creative industries career, catering to both traditional art, craft and design and media. It includes development of drawing, 3D, compositional and presentation skills; which are important to any creative student. The course offers key art skill development through fine art, print, photography, fashion & textiles, graphics and concept art.
As well as developing your creative skills, you will be encouraged to learn more about the history of key subject areas, artists and designers. The course takes one year to complete if you are studying full-time. To achieve the BTEC Certificate you need to obtain a Pass or above in all coursework units to achieve the full qualification.
You will continue to improve your Maths and/or English skills in separate lessons alongside your course and Maths and English will also be integrated into your main course programme.
You will have four GCSEs at grade 3 or above plus a good portfolio. One of the GCSE's must include an art & design based subject. This can include Art & Design, Photography, Graphics, Textiles or Product Design. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements can be discussed at your course discussion appointment.
If you do not have a minimum GCSE grade 4 for Maths / English you would study these as a part of your timetabled study programme. These structured weekly sessions will help you to improve your skills in these vital subject/s. In addition Maths and English development is integrated into practical course sessions throughout the year.
You are continuously assessed throughout the course both formally and informally. Assessments take the form of an individual display of work, which is assessed and evaluated by the staff that teach you. You will then receive formal feedback, highlighting areas for improvement. Your overall qualification is designated a Pass, Merit, and Distinction.

Full, successful completion of the course, along with high levels of attendance and a Merit grade, qualifies you to apply for one of our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diplomas, including Fashion; Art & Design; Games Art, Animation & Concept Art; Photography & Digital Media; Graphics & Creative Media. You should also have passed Maths or English at grade 4 or above if retaken with NSCG.
The course also enables you to produce a folio of 2D or digital work, to support direct applications to employers.
This course is free for anyone aged 16 – 18.
College Maintenance Allowance (CMA): Anyone with a gross household income under £30,000 can receive financial support to cover college related costs such as transport, meals, course equipment. Bursary support is based on individual circumstances and will be allocated to best suit your individual needs. What else do I need to know?
We will provide a range of essential art and design materials, including paper, pencils and charcoal. However, to support your practical and creative development throughout the course, you will also be provided with a supplementary materials list containing additional items that you will be expected to purchase.
As part of the programme, you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of enriching local and national educational visits, including trips to the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Art Gallery and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. A small contribution towards the cost of these visits will be required.
Students are expected to develop strong independent learning skills and engage in self-directed study both within and outside of college to support their progress and achievement.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be awarded the BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Art and Design Skills.
