Course overview

Engineering maintenance technicians work in a range of industries that use plant, equipment and systems. This includes energy, leisure entertainment, manufacturing, processing and utilities companies. The working environments vary across the industries.

This is a care and options apprenticeship. An apprentice must be trained and assessed against the core and one option. The options are:

  • electrical engineering maintenance technician
  • control and instrumentation engineering maintenance technician
  • mechanical engineering maintenance technician

Electrical engineering maintenance technicians' work focuses on the control and instrumentation aspects of plant, equipment and system. For example, programmable logic controllers, flow meters, heat exchangers and safety controls.

Control and instrumentation engineering maintenance technicians' work focuses on the control and instrumentation aspects of plant, equipment and systems. For example programmable logic controllers, flow meters, heat exchangers and safety controls.

Mechanical engineering maintenance technicians work focuses on mechanical aspects of plant, equipment and systems. For example, actuators, fans, pumps, valves, gearboxes, and pipework.

Engineering maintenance technicians maintain plant, equipment and systems to optimise operation. They conduct planned and preventative maintenance to prevent issues occurring and reactive maintenance when problems occur. For example, responding to breakdowns. They must prepare for and accept jobs, complete work safely to required standards, close the job, and complete work records. They also contribute to continuous improvement activities.

Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their Apprenticeships. In order to optimise success, candidates will typically have GCSEs at Grade C/4 or equivalent, including Mathematics, English and a Science.

Your progress is continually monitored throughout the course. Assessments are arranged when necessary and these take place on-the-job.

Assessments will include:observation of your performance; responses to written and/or spoken questions to show your knowledge and understanding; e-portfolio of supporting evidence containing testimonies, reflective accounts, assignments, work products such as activity planning sheets, completed risk assessments, continual professional development evidence. Apprenticeship duration 36 - 42 months.

Once you have completed your programme, met all of the pre-requisites for the EPA, including English and maths requirements, and your employer is satisfied that you are consistently working at or above the level set out in the occupational standard, you will be put through for your End Point Assessment which will take place within a 6 month period.

The EPA consists of 3 assessment methods:

  • Knowledge test
  • Practical observation
  • Technical interview underpinned by an evidence portfolio

What else do I need to know?

On an apprenticeship programme you usually will work for a minimum of 30 hours a week for the employer and then have one day a week at college or designated time in the workplace. Some job roles will require a DBS before starting, you will be advised at interview stage if this is required. Whilst you are on an apprenticeship your employer pays you a salary, this includes all off the job training as well.
