Course overview

During your time on the course you will have the opportunity to explore technical theatre through a range of specialist areas. We will enhance your knowledge and prepare you for university or apprenticeships (there is an acknowledged skills shortage in technical theatre and it provides most opportunities nationally for creative Apprenticeships).

This two year programme provides a thorough grounding in both sides of Theatre Production from The Historical Context of Performance, Production Planning and Production Performance, Front of House management and Operations, Events Management to the more technical side such as Stage Management, Stage Technical Maintenance, Stage Lighting Design and Operation, Stage Sound Design and Live Sound for the Stage.

As part of your study programme here at the College alongside your chosen course you will complete a maths and/or English qualification if you have not already achieved a grade 4-9 or above. (This will be a GCSE for all students with a grade 3).

The study programme will also incorporate a range of work related experience activities to ensure that you have the breadth of skills required to progress to further/higher education, employment or an apprenticeship.

What else do I need to know?

Learner Engagement is at the core of this course and you will help to produce lots of events and performances. There will be an optional residential element to the course in the second year and educational visits covering all aspects of theatre production.

What are the entry requirements?

You will need a minimum of four or more high grades at GCSE in subjects relevant to the course you’d like to study, including maths and/or English Language at grade 4 or above. Alternatively, you’ll need a Level 2 Diploma with overall Merit in a relevant subject and maths and English at appropriate levels.

You will be invited to interview/audition where you will have the opportunity to meet the department and be shown the outstanding facilities at the Performing Arts Centre. You will not need previous experience in production or performing arts but have a desire to learn all about technical production and stage management or arts in the community and the business of performing arts.

Maths and English
Alongside your course you will study Maths and/or English to improve your skills in these vital subjects by attending structured weekly sessions as part of your timetable. Maths and English development is also integrated in practical assignments.

How is it assessed?

The course contains a number of mandatory and specialist units, some of which are assessed externally. You will be assessed continually throughout the year as you complete each task within a unit of study. Tasks vary and include practical work, written reports and presentations.
