Course overview
Our short 10-hour English Language and Living in a New Community course is designed for people whose first language is not English and who may feel a little nervous about starting to learn a new language or settling into life in a new community.
It provides a gentle introduction to learning in a supportive environment, helping you build confidence alongside other adults before progressing onto a full ESOL course.
If you’re new to learning or finding it tricky to adapt to life in a new place, this friendly course is a great way to start.
Over the 10 hours, you’ll:
- Build confidence in basic English skills
- Learn useful language for daily life, such as communicating with neighbours, using public transport, and understanding local services
- Take part in practical activities that will help you feel more comfortable in your new community
There’s no pressure or exams, just friendly support to help you feel more confident using English in everyday situations.
Your tutor will guide you at your own pace, encouraging you to believe in your abilities. You’ll also be given tips for practising at home, helping you use your new language skills in real-life situations, such as shopping or talking to others in your area.
There are no formal entry requirements, just a willingness to learn and get involved.
There are no formal assessments, just progress made through learning. Together, we’ll track your progress on an individual learning plan, and your tutor will provide you with regular feedback to help you grow.
For further information, please contact our Adult Education Team on 01782 254211 or email adult.education@nscg.ac.uk.
Once you’ve completed this course, you’ll have the option to move on to other ESOL courses tailored to your level and needs.
This course is FREE to adults aged 19+ who have been a UK/EU Resident for 3 years or more.
