ESOL (Preparing to Work in Care)

During the course, you will:

• Learn common terminology and practices in the care sector
• Develop practical English language skills for care work
• Improve your communication skills with patients, colleagues, and healthcare professionals
• Build confidence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking in English
• Understand and apply cultural sensitivity and professionalism in a diverse workplace

The course combines Care, reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills each week to prepare you for work in social care. You will practice your speaking and listening skills through discussions and role-play. You will also develop your writing skills by working on letters, emails, and care notes.

Grammar will be taught along with themes health and Safety, job preparation and career development, and practical written documentation. You will work in groups, pairs, or independently to build confidence and learn everyday expressions.  Your teacher will support you throughout the course, but you need to be committed and motivated to succeed. You will also need to complete an additional 2 hours of self-study each week through homework and online resources.

This course is perfect for non-native English speakers who want to work in the care sector, such as healthcare assistants, support workers, and care home staff. You should have:

• Basic English skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening)
• A genuine interest in working in the care sector

To make sure the course meets your needs, you will be invited to attend college one evening before the course starts. This session will include an initial assessment, a chance to meet your teacher, and more information about the course. After this session, you will have a 1:1 meeting with your teacher to assess your speaking, listening, and writing skills.

There are no formal exams in this course. However, you and your teacher will track your progress through an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and various activities. These activities will include:

• Discussions and note-taking
• Group activities and role-plays
• Real-life scenarios
• One-on-one assessments and feedback
