Newcastle College Recognises Excellence with Monthly Student Awards

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.

This month, we’re joined by our incredible January winners and they were selected for a variety of reasons, from shining in their chosen courses to impressing everyone with their commitment and dedication. We want to say a huge thank you to Gordon Mole, Chief Executive of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council for presenting this months awards.

Henrick Saylon - Award for the Faculty of Academic and Creative Studies

Throughout his studies, Henrick has consistently demonstrated remarkable determination, maturity and resilience, alongside a genuine passion for academic excellence and service to others. His predicted outcomes in Biology, Chemistry and Psychology are outstanding and securing an offer to study Medicine at the University of Exeter is a truly impressive achievement.

Beyond the classroom, Henrick has shown strong social responsibility through voluntary work and leadership, making meaningful contributions to the wider community. His reflective nature, integrity and readiness for future challenges set him apart as an inspiring role model. Henrick is a real credit to himself and the College, and we have no doubt he will continue to thrive and make a positive impact in his future career.

Sophie Godwin - Award for the Faculty of Vocational Studies

With an incredible 100% attendance record, a Distinction in her first Unit 6 assignment and performance currently above her target grade at DDD, Sophie continues to show both academic excellence and real determination to give her very best.

Beyond her studies, Sophie stands out for her maturity, professionalism and the positive way she supports her peers in the classroom. Her compassionate nature has also shone through on placement at Crispin Court Care Home, where feedback from staff and residents alike has been exceptional. Sophie is a fantastic ambassador for the College and a wonderful role model to others. We have every confidence that she has a bright and successful future ahead.

Mebruke Kose - Award for the Faculty of Vocational Studies

Since joining her course, Mebruke has impressed tutors with her maturity, focus and determination. She approaches every challenge with resilience, takes responsibility for her progress and engages fully in her studies, setting a fantastic example for those around her.

In lessons, Mebruke’s calm, respectful and considerate behaviour helps create a welcoming and productive learning environment for everyone. She also responds thoughtfully to feedback, applying it to her work with real care and a genuine desire to improve. This recognition is thoroughly deserved and reflects the high standards Mebruke continues to set for herself. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and look forward to seeing her go from strength to strength in the future.

Declan Finney - Award for the Faculty of Professional Studies

Since joining NSCG in September 2025 on the T Level in Legal Services, Declan has made an excellent start to college life. With 98% attendance and 100% punctuality, he consistently demonstrates a strong work ethic and a real determination to succeed. His recent mock exam results, achieving between Grade A and B overall, reflect both his academic ability and focused approach to learning.

Declan brings enthusiasm and positivity to every lesson, engaging fully and always supporting those around him. Despite managing an eye condition, he has never let this limit his progress, showing remarkable resilience and maturity. Alongside his studies, Declan balances part-time work at Sainsbury’s and a legal placement at Beeston Shenton Solicitors, where his professionalism and dedication have been highly praised. With ambitions to study law and pursue a career in military law, Declan is already building an impressive future.

Lucas Bennett - Award for Skills and Technology

Lucas is an incredibly hardworking learner who consistently strives to improve, listening carefully to instructions, responding positively to feedback and asking thoughtful questions to deepen his understanding. In practical sessions, Lucas shows real innovation and determination, always looking for ways to refine his skills and push himself further.

His outstanding 99% attendance reflects his professionalism and strong work ethic. Lucas has also recently secured a place at Drayton Beaumont Academy, standing out during the interview process thanks to his maturity, capability and potential, a fantastic achievement to be proud of. With his drive and enthusiasm, Lucas is well on his way to becoming a highly skilled electrician.

Will Burton - Apprentice of the Month

Will has shown outstanding dedication on his impressive engineering apprenticeship journey! He has taken full ownership of his apprenticeship, managing his priorities with maturity and professionalism while producing exceptional Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours evidence. His commitment is truly remarkable, balancing demanding studies with a daily three-hour commute shows real resilience and determination.

Currently on track for a Distinction in his Level 4 HNC in Engineering, Will is already making a huge impact at Siemens. From leading projects to reducing noise levels on new equipment through innovative design and 3D printing, he consistently exceeds expectations. With his enthusiasm, technical skill and strong work ethic, Will is building an incredibly bright future in engineering.

Hettie Bent - Award for the Faculty of Arts

Now in her second year on the Fashion course, Hettie has maintained an incredible 100% attendance record and is predicted to achieve DDD*. She has already received well-deserved university offers in Fashion Communication and Art Direction, reflecting the high standard of work she consistently produces.

Hettie approaches every brief with imagination, confidence and strong technical skill, always pushing herself creatively while planning thoughtfully. Her collaborative spirit shines in group projects, where she supports others and contributes inspiring ideas. Her strength in image-making and fashion communication is particularly impressive, with beautifully styled, concept-driven work that demonstrates a sophisticated visual language.

Leyana Ebanks - Award for English and Maths

A highly dedicated and motivated student, Leyana consistently demonstrates an exceptional work ethic, a positive attitude and a genuine desire to succeed. She approaches her studies with focus, maturity and determination, taking pride in producing work to the very best of her ability. Her reliability, conscientiousness and reflective approach to learning set her apart, while her ongoing drive to improve is inspiring.

In English, Leyana has shown remarkable commitment, achieving success in her November resit. She has impressed with excellent punctuality, active participation in lessons, thoughtful engagement with feedback, and resilience when facing challenges. Beyond the classroom, her dedication continues through consistent revision, independent study and personal responsibility for her progress.
