NSCG event shines a light on Carpentry industry
Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group (NSCG) recently hosted an inspiring event for Carpentry students, bringing together industry professionals to engage with learners about the trade and its future developments.
Esteemed guest speakers from the Institute of Carpenters (IOC) and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) were warmly welcomed to Stafford College’s auditorium, where they delivered insightful talks on a variety of topics relevant to the field.
A scene setting introduction was provided by Geoff Rhodes, the President of the IOC followed by CITB’s Patricia Hicks who highlighted the employment landscape and career opportunities within the industry.
Chris Johnstone, from local timber and general merchants AJ Philpott and Sons, provided a local business perspective on the Carpentry sector while Roly Ward, of Medite Smartply discussed the technical developments influencing the profession.
As with many industries, sustainability is an important factor for carpentering professionals, so Historic England’s Joseph Tong and SCA Group’s Strategic Advisor, Stephen King delved into ‘The Green Agenda’, looking at topics such as Conservation, Sustainability and Heritage.
Neville Buttery, Curriculum Leader for Carpentry and Joinery at NSCG, said: “This was a very important day for NSCG and we are so proud to have this partnership with The Institute of Carpenters and CITB.
“Stafford College is one of only ten colleges across the UK who have had the privilege to host this prestigious event and I’m confident that each and every student has learnt something new from the session.”
“I’d like to thank all of the speakers who contributed to such a successful event and for supporting us in this important moment.”
