NSCG Students Sees National Boxing Success
29 September 2026
Laila Johnson, second year T level Education and Early Years student at NSCG Newcastle College has seen national success in in England amateur boxing.
Laila’s boxing journey started as a fun hobby at the age of 13, but she quickly saw her own potential and decided to pursue the sport more seriously.
Laila commented, “Boxing is great as it brings people together from all across the country, I’ve made friends with people that don’t live that close, and without my sport I wouldn’t have had that opportunity. The boxing community is amazing and one of my favourite memories is when my team travelled to Ireland for a competition, supporting each other every step of the way.
“NSCG alongside providing lots of opportunities to learn in fun and different ways, has been a really supportive environment, my teachers are always excited to hear about my [boxing] progress and that makes it all the more exciting!
Having already reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Winter Box Cup 2024, and with more fights scheduled for the coming months, she’s working towards becoming the best athlete she can be, both for herself and for those around her. Planning on heading to university isn’t slowing Laila’s ambitions either, as she intends to continue training just as hard wherever she goes to study.
