Embracing New Challenges: Nicola Round's Return to Education After 20 Years

Master Data Specialist, Nicola Round chose to return to education as an adult learner to retrain as an engineer. Studying a HNC in Engineering part-time alongside her employment at GE Renewal Energy, Nicola has excelled during her time at NSCG and was recently awarded a 'Higher Education Student of the Year Award.'

I was the oldest in the class and the only female, but I soon realised this wasn't an issue.

Why did you decide to study the HNC Engineering course at NSCG?

I currently work as a Master Data Specialist at GE Renewable in Stafford and I made the decision to study an engineering degree to reskill and retrain as a Production Engineer. I was fully supported by my employer to make the change, so I decided to go for it.

You study part-time around your work commitments. How do you find balancing the two?

At first, it was daunting as it's been 15-20 years since I was last in a college environment. With the help and support of both my employer and tutors, I quickly found the balance between work life and my college commitments. Now, it seems like second nature as long as I don't just sit on my assignments.

What have you enjoyed most about the course?

I really enjoyed mixing with a new group of people from different areas. I was worried at first as I was the oldest in the class and the only female, but I soon realised this wasn't an issue. I found it inspiring to hear other people talk about their own experiences and aspirations.

What would you say was your biggest challenge?

Gathering the courage to actually start was my biggest challenge. My first day was really nerve-racking especially the maths lesson. However, after I had pushed myself to do it, then it got so much easier, and I actually enjoyed it.

The class sizes at NSCG are smaller than most universities. Was this a positive aspect for you?

You definitely benefit from a more personalised learning environment at NSCG, and peer to peer discussions are a positive aspect of the learning.

What's next for you?

I have chosen to progress on the HND in Engineering at Stafford College and I then want to 'top-up' to a full engineering degree.

What would your advice be for other adult learners who are thinking of retraining?

I would say to push yourself to do it. It is so worth it and there is so much support out there. You won't regret it.
