NATALIE WILSON

All of the courses I have had the chance to study have had a really positive impact on my life. I feel more confident and studying at NSCG has motivated me to become more independent including learning to drive and I've even passed my test!

Natalie Wilson, Adult Learner

Which courses have you studied so far at NSCG?

I am currently studying English Confidence for Life and Work, but I have also recently completed lots of other courses. These include: NCFE Award in an Introduction to Early Years Settings; Confidence for the World of Work; Introduction to Becoming a Teaching Assistant; Introduction to Working in Early Years; Computer and Digital Skills for Beginners; Using AI Confidently in Everyday Life; Maths Confidence for Life and Work; Preparing to Work in Schools and Introduction to Volunteering.

What made you decide to come back to college as an adult learner?

I decided to return to college because I wanted to grow personally and professionally. Working as a school escort made me realise how much I enjoy supporting children and being someone they can feel comfortable around. I wanted to develop my knowledge and skills so I could have an even more positive impact on the children I work with as a transport escort and for my own children too.

How did you feel on your very first day?

I must admit that I felt nervous but also proud of myself for how far I've come.

What have you learnt so far that will help you in your career and everyday life?

The courses have helped me to communicate more effectively, to understand children better and become more aware of different needs and perspectives. This also helps me in my current job.

Have you found any parts of the courses really tricky?

Balancing studying with everyday life, work and my children has been challenging at times but the best part has been gaining the confidence I need to push myself further to benefit others and to make a positive difference to my own children's lives. I hope that I am a good role model to them.

You have studied a lot of courses at NSCG. How have they changed your life so far?

The courses have motivated me to become more independent. I have even taken driving lessons and gone on to pass my test which is lifechanging for my career prospects.

How are you enjoying learning at the NSCG in Town Learning Hub?

The facilities are amazing and really easy to get to being in the centre of Stafford. Everything is so new and accessible so it will appeal to adult learners of all ages.

Where do you want to be in 12 months time?

I would like to continue developing my experience working with children and build on the skills I have gained so far on my courses. I hope to take on more opportunities to support children and continue working towards a reward career with children.

You recently won an adult learning award. What does this mean to you?

I feel valued as a learner and it makes me feel that the hard work is really paying off and has been noticed.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of signing up for a part time course, but feel worried about returning to education?

I would say, don't let nerves hold you back from giving it a try. I was worried about returning to education myself, but once I started, I realised that everyone is there to learn and grow and we're all in this together.
