Q&A with Jane Tunnicliff, Director of Apprenticeships, NSCG

07 August 2026

JANE TUNNICLIFF STAFFS CHAMBER

Does the College apprenticeship provision close for summer?

No, we continue to operate throughout the summer, with assessors/lecturers still delivering training, prepping apprentices for End Point Assessments and interviewing new recruits.

The Apprenticeship Hub, who support with recruiting new apprentices are busy advertising new vacancies, shortlisting applicants and arranging employer interviews. They also use this period to arrange initial assessments and diagnostics tests which are part of our comprehensive on-boarding process.

Managers will spend this time working with employers to plan new starts, develop resources and provide any additional support required so our current apprentices achieve over the summer.

I’m considering taking on an apprentice, is it too late to advertise now?

No, this is the perfect time to begin your recruitment process whilst we have school leavers and college leavers actively looking for their next career steps. The Apprenticeship Hub and team are here to take away the burden of advertising, shortlisting and organising interviews - all free of charge.

Are there any incentives for employers to support with taking on a new apprentice?

For employers recruiting a 16–18-year-old (19-24 years with an Education Health Care Plan) a £1000 incentive is available. 50% paid at 90 days and the remainder at 365 days.

From October 2026, non-levy paying employers will be able to get a hiring payment of £2000 when recruiting a new apprentice aged 16-24 years. They must not be on the PAYE scheme for more than 90 days prior to their practical start date of 1st October (50% paid at 90 days and the remainder at 365 days by the provider).

Is there any new provision coming for 26/27?

Absolutely, we are excited to be able to offer a new Level 2 Administration apprenticeship aimed to support young people aged 16-24 years. A great way for an apprentice to be introduced to your business and develop the skills and knowledge needed to be a real asset and start on their journey to success in the world of work.

Higher Apprenticeships are now planned and developed to start this September and October for: Quality Practitioner (Level 4), Associate Project Manager (Level 4) and Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability Practitioner (Level 4). These come on the back of successfully rolling out the Network Engineer, Software Developer, Civil Engineering Senior Technician all at  Level 4, as well as the Specialist Teaching Assistant at level 5.
