Theo Abel, A Levels in Physical Education, Business Studies, Psychology & EPQ

What sport do you take part in?

I play both cricket and hockey.

How and when did you first get into it?

I started cricket when I was seven because my friend was playing it, and I started hockey when I was 11 after finding out the new school I was joining was a hockey playing school. I wanted to join and see what it was all about.

What level are you currently competing at?

I play county cricket and Talent Academy hockey.

What is your best sporting achievement?

In hockey I made the tier 1 Under 16 National Plate final and in cricket I won the North Staffordshire Under 19 Cup.

Have you competed in any competitions and what were the results? Or do you have any upcoming events?

I have competed in the National Cup in hockey and many county tournaments in both sports. I have the national semi-final for hockey soon versus Taunton Vale and the cricket season is just around the corner.

What are you working towards at the moment?

I am working towards securing my team's place in the hockey league and winning the semi-final. In cricket I’m working towards full fitness ready for the season.

What is your favourite thing about your sport?

Winning!

What is one thing about your sport that would surprise people?

How tactical both games are. Particularly countering opposition styles in hockey and working out how to get the better of batsmen in cricket.

Who inspires you? Do you have a sporting icon or someone in life you look up to?

My idol is Joe Root. He is a world class performer and shows that never giving up is the most important. In test centuries he had the least out of the big 4 batsmen in 2021 but now he leads the century tally in tests.

What is your favourite memory from your sporting career so far?

Winning the Under 19 title in cricket!

What is your favourite thing about studying at NSCG?

How relaxed and kind everyone is and how supporting of sport all the teachers are.

What are your plans for life after college?

I would like to go to Australia to play cricket for a year, and then pursue a degree apprenticeship or go to Loughborough University.

What are your long-term career goals?

To make money in cricket and be recognised as one of the best in the league.

How has NSCG helped you with your sport?

They have given me the opportunity to play in many tournaments for both sports.

What advice would you give to someone their first day at NSCG?

Just relax, everything will be fine.
