Stafford students march to the beat of success for Student of the Month

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.

This month saw the March round of nominees collect their awards. The presentations included a number of inspirational stories from staff about their nominees, including: overcoming personal challenges, going above and beyond on their chosen courses, exemplary attendance and hard work. We want to say a huge thank you to Sir Gavin Williamson CBE, MP for Stone, Penkridge & Great Wyrley, for joining us and presenting the awards.

Samuel Wareham - Professional Studies Award

From Foundation Learning at Level 1 to achieving Distinctions across the board at Level 3, Samuel’s journey is a masterclass in hard work, growth and determination. Known for his focus and passion for sport, Samuel has wowed tutors with his ability to apply complex concepts practically and consistently perform at a high level. His professionalism during work experience at Alleyne’s Academy earned glowing feedback, while his positive presence in lessons makes him a joy to teach. He’s also celebrated a big milestone, passing GCSE English, now on track for success in GCSE Maths this summer.

Charlotte Durose - Vocational Studies Award

Charlotte has consistently gone above and beyond in her T Level Health studies, showing outstanding dedication both in and out of the classroom. She’s represented the course at the Employer Support Conference, featured on the T-Level Conversations podcast and regularly promotes the programme at open events and career roadshows. Her passion for health care truly shines through during placements with UHNM and MPFT. Charlotte supported an end-of-life patient over three emotional days, offering care and comfort not just to the patient, but their family too, demonstrating incredible compassion and professionalism.

Joel Campbell - Apprentice of the Month

Joel, who, alongside fellow apprentice Harry Kelly, has played a key role in delivering a brand-new production line at GE Vernova as part of their Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technicians apprenticeship. From concept to installation, Joel supported every stage of the project, helping to set up Standard Operating Procedures and leading a lean manufacturing project to streamline the process. His efforts helped ensure production restarted on time for a major product range. GE Vernova’s Higher Management Team praised Joel for his outstanding dedication and impact. He’s proven to be a driven and talented apprentice with a bright future in engineering ahead.

Harry Kelly - Apprentice of the Month

Harry is recognised for his outstanding work at GE Vernova, where he’s currently completing the Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technicians course alongside fellow apprentice Joel Campbell. Harry played a vital role in supporting the design, installation, and optimisation of a brand-new production line, from concept to commissioning. He also contributed to a lean manufacturing project that improved efficiency and helped deliver the line on time for the restart of a key product range. The Higher Management Team at GE Vernova praised Harry for his teamwork and determination, noting his crucial support in ensuring success across multiple teams.

Sophie Chimezie - Academic Studies Award

Having joined NSCG in September 2024 after completing her education in Nigeria, Sophie has shown nothing but determination and ambition as she works toward her goal of becoming a Doctor. She’s currently studying A Level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology and has already exceeded all her target grades, smashing expectations in every subject. Her teachers praise her for her organisation and sheer drive to succeed, she’s constantly going above and beyond both in and outside the classroom. From leading in class discussions to constantly improving her work based on feedback, Sophie is a true role model to her peers.

Noah Reeves-Jones – Arts Award

Noah's journey is a true inspiration. Overcoming challenges with Dyslexia and Dyscalculia, he’s shown incredible resilience and passion for creativity. With a growing talent for surface pattern design, Noah channels inspiration from his travels and continues to push the boundaries with digital work and vibrant use of colour. Currently working towards D*D*D*, Noah's commitment is reflected in his outstanding assignments and enthusiastic participation, including work experience at Pretty Potz, MUD Ceramics and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. Now thriving at Stafford College. Noah has found confidence and a sense of belonging, with plans to progress to university after the Art Foundation Diploma.

Dom Knight - English Award

Dom’s resilience is inspiring, maintaining excellent attendance, attending extra revision sessions and always taking ownership of catching up when needed. His commitment doesn’t stop at his own progress, Dom is a true team player, consistently supporting his peers with encouragement and help during tough tasks, creating a positive and uplifting classroom vibe. Outside of English, Dom is thriving in Level 2 Art and preparing to move up to Level 3 Animation, where his real passion lies. He’s determined to achieve a Grade 4 in English to support his future goals, with his focus and attitude, he’s well on his way.

Evan Bowers - Professional Studies Award

Evan is smashing it academically, on track for an A in his summer exams and already gaining real-world experience with two impressive industry placements – at Stone Computers and Norwell Lapley Productions Ltd. His placement supervisors say his digital work is accurate and consistent, his timekeeping is top-tier and his enthusiasm is contagious. He’s also starring in a lead role at the Crewe Lyceum theatre in a powerful play exploring youth mental health and the impact of gaming on wellbeing. On top of that, he represented NSCG at the AoC Badminton Finals, winning 6 out of 8 matches across singles, doubles and mixed!
