17th January 2023

Each month Newcastle and Stafford Colleges Group hold a ‘Student of the Month’ awards presentation at that highlights and recognises the individual effort, progress and dedication of students who go above and beyond throughout the year.

Highlighting and recognising the individual efforts, progress and dedication of students, the presentations included a number of inspirational stories from staff about their nominees who have gone above and beyond on their chosen course area. We were pleased to welcome John Henderson, the Chief Executive of Staffordshire County Council, as our special guest for this month's awards.

Princess Okotieboh

Nominated to receive the Award for Maths & English, Princess is a focused and hardworking student. Moving to Stafford from Lagos, Nigeria in August 2022, she has completely settled into college life. Arriving with an incredible set of O Levels, with Level 9s and 8s across the board. To support her A Levels and future of University, Princess requires a UK qualification, and has been excelling in GCSE English Language ever since. From the start of the course she has been a model student, not just because of her impeccable attendance and obvious intelligence, but as a result of the fearless way she challenges views and offers ideas and opinions. Princess is incredibly generous with her thoughts and ideas, and is very supportive with other students. With a clear vision of her future as a Neurosurgeon, Princess has set her sights on an Oxbridge College and is determined to achieve this. Among her lecturers and peers, there is certainty that she will accomplish her goal.

Christian Hassall

He has become an integral member of the group, leading from the front with enthusiasm and energy towards his practical and theoretical studies. The level of commitment Christian implements into his studies is awe-inspiring, leading to his work ethic being recognised by the AoC Sport Fitness Trainer Competition, making it through to the National Final. Christian embodies the ethos of challenging himself academically and physically throughout the course, continually embracing the opportunity to expand his network explore other avenues within the fitness training industry to cater for a more diverse demographic.

Maddie Sleeuwenhoek

Nominated to receive the Award for Academic and Creative Studies, Maddie is a highly motivated and inspirational student. Since starting in September, Maddie has worked above and beyond on the Level 3 Extended Diploma Fashion and Textile course. Despite beginning with very little skills in garment production, Maddie volunteered to gain work experience for the Performing Arts Department, where she was asked to design and produce the Dame Character costumes. She applied herself to a professional standard, working hard and putting in the hours to making sure the garments were completed in time while gaining valuable experience on how the industry works. Maddie always works incredibly hard, both in and out of the taught sessions. She is quick to understand the requirements and the high standard expected within the course. Clearly heading for D*D*D* grades when completing the course next year, there is no doubt that Maddie is on the road to success.
