Course overview

Dive into the fascinating world of numbers, patterns, and problem-solving with our A Level Maths course. Through study, collaborative problem-solving, and practical exercises, students develop the analytical skills and mathematical fluency to succeed in a variety of fields.

Maths is a challenging and stimulating subject and good Maths skills lay the foundations for many different careers. The course offers you the chance to build upon existing mathematical knowledge from GCSE in addition to extending into areas such as Mechanics and Statistics. It provides an excellent foundation for higher level study in a wide variety of subjects and is a highly sought-after qualification. The course will cover aspects of three areas in Maths: Pure Maths, Mechanics and Statistics. You can find detailed information on the website: edexcel.co.uk

Year 1: Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and Calculus are all examples of Pure Maths topics in the first year. In Mechanics you will look at topics such as Motion In 1 Dimension. In Statistics you will look at topics such as Hypothesis Testing.

Year 2: Numerical Methods, Parametric Equations and Further Calculus are all examples of topics you will study in the second year. In Mechanics, you will also look at topics such as Motion In 2 Dimensions. In Statistics, you will also look at topics such as The Normal Distribution and Conditional Probability.

In addition to lectures and teacher support the course places an emphasis on self-study. We provide you with access to various websites, which is excellent for distance learning too. There are videos and worked examples on the website to help you learn. During the course there are several written assessments in addition to the verbal feedback that you receive from your teacher.

A Level Maths combines well with A Level Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Further Maths, Biology and our brand new A+ Certificate in Engineering (equivalent to one A Level).

NSCG is a great environment for learning Maths. We have a highly dedicated team with vast experience of teaching A Level students. We also provide support for MAT prospects. Highly motivated/interested students are encouraged to enter AEA (Advanced Extension Award) in Maths.

You will need a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 5 or above including maths and English Language, in subjects relevant to your A Level or A+ Programme subject choices.

You should also have GCSE grade 6 or above in Maths, and an average point score of 6.0 or above.

The examining body that we use is Edexcel. It is intended that there will be three exam papers at the end of the second year. There is no coursework element.
