Course overview

Ever heard the phrase ‘everyone has a book in them’? Join our new course where you’ll learn the fundamentals of creative writing and be that one step closer to fulfilling your dreams to becoming a successful author. If you’re a complete beginner or looking to enhance your confidence in your writing skills, then this course is a great opportunity to develop your craft and allow your creativity to blossom.

On this course, you will be exposed to a breadth of writing skills and topics such as fiction, non-fiction, poetry and screenwriting. Each session will give you lots of opportunities to experiment with a variety of language & structural techniques, discover a range of exciting genres and the key tropes that define them.

Fiction Module
You will discover the essential mechanics of novel writing such as characterisation, setting, perspective, dialogue and the various structures you can use to plot your story. Additionally, you will be introduced to other forms of fictional prose such as short stories, flash fiction and vignettes.

Alongside the varying approaches to writing fiction, you will discover a diverse range of genres such as: adventure, children’s literature, crime fiction, fantasy, horror, romance, sci-fi, western and obscure genres from across the world. These will be great opportunities to trial different styles of writing and find your individual voice.

Poetry Module 

You will have the opportunity to learn lots of different language skills that are appropriate to this mode and explore lots of different forms such as: ballad, elegy, ghazal, haibun, haiku, ode, sonnet and villanelle.

Screenwriting Module

In this part of the course, you will learn about the expectations of writing for film, radio, television and theatre and how these forms have differing approaches to writing a novel or a short story. Some of the topics you may explore in this module include: kitchen-sink drama, monologue, one-act play, sitcom and soap opera.

Non-Fiction Module

Alongside skills associated with fiction and poetry, you will also learn about how creative writing can be used in various areas of non-fiction such as: biographical writing, cultural criticism, essay writing, memoir, nature writing, opinion pieces and travel writing.

Level 2 English qualification or GCSE in English Language graded 3 or above.

There are no formal assessments, just the opportunity to enjoy learning about creative writing in a relaxed and supportive environment. However, we will check your progress through a variety of practical and written activities to help you see how far you've come.

You’ll keep track of your development through an Individual Learning Plan, which will reflect your personal journey with creative writing. Your teacher will provide regular feedback and encouragement to help you grow in confidence and reach your goals.
