Course overview

Do you want to make a difference to young children’s lives?

This two-year Level 2 Occupational Certificate in Early Years Practitioner will help you develop the knowledge, practical skills and professional behaviours needed to begin a career in early years.

You will learn about children’s development, supporting learning through play, safeguarding, health and wellbeing and meeting individual needs. You will also explore how practitioners work with parents, carers and other professionals, while developing your communication and teamwork skills.

Within the course you will also study GCSE maths and English language (if required).

You will need 4 GCSEs at grade 3 or above. However, if you have a keen interest in the subject and commitment to succeed, your entry requirements will be discussed at your course discussion appointment.

You will be assessed through a combination of examinations (30%) and non - exam assessments (70%), using tasks linked to real early years practice. You will also need to demonstrate your practical competence during work placement.

The qualification is graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

If you wish to find out more you can contact Caroline Badland-Jackson, Curriculum Leader in Early Years, by emailing: caroline.badland-jackson@nscg.ac.uk

What else do I need to know?

Alongside your college learning, you will complete around 250 hours of work placement in an early years setting, putting your learning into practice and gaining valuable experience.

As you will be working with children, you will need to have a clearance form which is called a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) in order to ensure the safety of the vulnerable children and young adults that you will come into contact with.
